Hi David,
I did a weeks campervan tour of the red centre of Australia last year. My daughter lives in Cairns and we decided that whilst in the country it wold be wrong not to visit Ayers Rock and the centre of Australia. I booked the trip with about a days notice, so you couldn't describe it as "planned" in any way.
We flew to Alice Springs and picked up a hired camper from Britz and set out into the desert.
Distances are very large by UK or European standards and some places need a 4x4 to reach them.
Our van was essentially a long wheelbase Mercedes Sprinter high-top with a simple camper conversion. It had every thing you would need, but was done to a basic serviceable standard. Importantly, unlike cheaper hires, it had both cab and habitation aircon.
If you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to try to answer them.
Regards
Chris
